Active ageing
We have recently completed an Age Friendly Community Study with funding received from the Department for Communities and South West Development Commission.
The project is based on World Health Organisation (WHO) methodology (The Western Australian Age Friendly Toolkit) and has the aim of ascertaining how age-friendly our Shire is in relation to outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, respect and inclusion, social participation, communication and information, civic participation and employment and community support and health services.
Key Outcomes
Overall the Shire was deemed to be age friendly within the majority of study areas, however it was acknowledged that improvements could be made across:
- Housing affordability and options
- Public toilets
- Footpaths
- Accessible parking and drop off points
- Safe pedestrian crossings
- Road maintenance and safety.
Future Plans
Recommendations within the Age Friendly Community Report will provide a blue print for strategies to enhance the age friendliness of our shire and are currently being integrated into other areas.
