RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT GUIDE

The Augusta-Margaret River Shire maintains an environmentally friendly and effective recycling and waste management service. We provide kerbside recycling and waste collection, a drop-off recycling service, transfer stations in outlying centres and a waste water treatment plant.

Weekly kerbside rubbish collections, and fortnightly recycling collections, (using 240 litre wheelie bins) are provided for urban and semi-rural residents.

Rural residents are provided with a Waste Facility Pass, which permits the deposit of 13 cubic metres of rubbish per year (the equivalent of the weekly wheelie bin service provided in town) at a transfer station or the main Waste Management Facility, Davis Road, Witchcliffe. (Phone: 9757 6077)

Kerbside Collections - Recycling

Council participates in a regional recycling scheme with other South West councils. Green Recycling, based in Bunbury, operates the regional contract for a kerbside recycling collection to householders in specified areas.
Householders are provided with a 240 litre yellow top bin for separate collection of:

• Plastic soft drink, milk and fruit juice bottles;
• Glass bottles, flagons and jars;
• Milk and juice cartons;
• Steel and aluminium cans;
• Newspapers and cardboard.

Please DO NOT place any of the following in your yellow top bin:

• Plastic bags
• Batteries or metal
• Rubber or leather
• Garden waste
• Timber or building materials
• Clothing
• Food scraps or wrappings
• Oil, acid or chemicals
• Crockery
• Pottery or porcelain
• Plate glass

Recycling bins are emptied once a fortnight, on the same day as your rubbish bin. Collection day calendars are available at Council's Margaret River office in Town View Terrace and the depot in Railway Terrace.

Kerbside Collections - Rubbish

Another contractor, locally based AMR Waste Disposals, operates the kerbside waste removal contract for the Shire. Green 240 litre bins are available from the Council. A fee of $90 is payable at the Shire offices in Townview Terrace and the bins can be collected, upon presentation of the receipt, at the depot in Railway Terrace.
Please put out your bin, flush with the kerb and handle facing away from the road, by 6:00 am on the collection day. A minimum distance of 0.5 metres is required between your rubbish and recycling bins on applicable collection days. Please do not remove the blue and white audit sticker from your rubbish bin.

Collection Days

The following materials are NOT TO BE PLACED in your green wheelie bin:

• Building & garden waste,
• Heavy metals,
• Flammable liquids,
• Car batteries,
• Gas bottles
• Oil

Free drop-off oil recycling is available at the Kudardup and Cowaramup transfer stations and the main Witchcliffe Recycling & Waste Management Facility.

Drop Off Services - Recycling

Our staffed facilities, at Davis Rd (Witchcliffe), Cowaramup Bay Road (Cowaramup) and Poole Road (Kudardup), can accept the following materials, separated into type, for recycling:

• Glass bottles & jars (remove lids & rinse)
• Aluminium cans
• Aluminium foil
• Phonebooks
• Newspapers, office paper, envelopes;
• Magazines and glossy brochures;
• Pizza boxes (clean & dry)
• Egg cartons (cardboard only)
• Cardboard
• Steel aerosol cans (must be empty)
• Steel food cans (rinsed)
• Milk cartons – tetra pack (rinsed)
• Juice cartons - tetra pack (rinsed)
• Plastic bottles e.g. juice bottles, soft drink bottles (those with the recycling symbol accepted)
• Plastic containers e.g. yogurt, margarine, ice cream (recycling symbol only accepted)
• Car bodies and scrap metals (Davis Rd only)

Our Davis Road Waste Management and Recycling Centre, at Witchcliffe, offers the following services:

• Recycling for separated materials.
• Separate landfill facilities for inert and putrescible waste.
• Burial of domestic and farm animals.
• Disposal of contaminated soils and bio-solid waste (with DEP approval).
• Special burials (asbestos) by prior arrangement (must be wrapped and sealed).

Waste Charges

General waste (per 0.25 m³ unit)/Minimum Charge $4.00

All drop-offs charged per unit (equal to one wheelie bin). Rural properties with waste card: no charge for 52 units per year (equal to kerbside collection).

Green waste (up to 1m³) No charge
Green waste (per m³ exceeding 1m³) $6.00

(Must be clean and free of all contaminants).
